 UnWanted Foals:  Butchered into Veal?
or a Hammer to the Head?
What Would You Have Done?

45 weanlings and yearlings prepare for their new lives in the eastern U.S.

The young horses pictured below are some of the 100 foals that we rescued in December to keep them from being bought by killer buyers who would ship them to Canada to be processed into a meat product similar to veal.

The foals that were still nursing off of their mares when rescued, may have been hit over the head with a hammer and thrown into the trash like yesterday's newspaper.

Lifesavers is working with rescue groups in Missouri and Florida that will take groups of these foals and find homes for them in their regions.  Many of them are already spoken for and have wonderful homes waiting their arrival.

The cost of shipping these horses all the way from Nevada to Florida is a fortune 9$11,000) but if we don't let them go to homes that want them, we will spend that much and more in feed over the next several months.

So we have to consider it an investment in the horses' happy futures and a savings for Lifesavers in the big picture.

This group of foals would have been heartlessly murdered if not rescued last month by Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescu

Just since July we managed to keep 350 horses from suffering a cruel - heartless - death by slaughter!

But we need your help now more than ever to feed and care for them until they can find homes and sanctuaries.

A mare cares for her newborn foal at Lifesavers

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Wild Horse Advocates,

If you've been following the recent undertakings of Lifesavers, then you know that we have rescued 350 mustangs from killer sales in Fallon Nevada since July 2010.  And that we already had 300 previously rescued horses to care for.

Many of the newly rescued horses are pregnant mares or mares with foals by their sides.  I made the decision to save these horses from the ruthless killer buyers who buy and sell horses for meat and sell them to the slaughter houses in Canada and Mexico.

You may or may not know that the killer buyers who purchase horses for slaughter do not all operate in the same manner.

Some killer buyers ship all the horses they can find to Canada where they are butchered into meat products and sold in foreign countries for human consumption.

Even the fresh young foals are desired in the same way young calves are because their flesh is tender and becomes a "veal" type meat that is highly palatable according to French and Japanese horse eaters.

But, some killer buyers would rather deal with truckloads of heavy horses that bring a higher price per pound in Mexico than the little newborns.  So, when the pregnant mares give birth at the killers' feedlots, or if they have young foals nursing off of them, they brutally kill the babies by hitting them over the head with a hammer.  Sometimes this is done just a few minutes before forcing the distressed mare onto the killer trucks that will take her to her own brutal end.

Oh - I know - some people think I have gone crazy to take on so many more rescued horses.  The cost of feed is insane - about $40,000 each month to feed all of the horses that are under our care.

But knowing what I know, about the cruel death of these innocent horses...the brutality inflicted upon precious newborns like the one in the photo above...would you, as a loyal and compassionate friend, expect any less of me and Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue?

If not....If you would also do whatever it takes to spare innocent horses such a horrible inhumane death, and give them the best life you possibly could until nature decides when their time on earth is through....

Then please tell me that you will support Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue with your most generous donation ever.  We are scrambling like we never have before to purchase loads and loads of hay each month.

Each rescued horse costs about $60 each month just to feed.  Multiply that by 650 horses and your head might spin like mine does when I think about how I'm going to raise that kind of money every month.

But I believe that I have made the decision that our supporters, YOU, would have made as well.

I believe that you will stand by Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue and it's 650 hungry mouths.

We are actively adopting out as many of the rescued horses as we can.  See the side story about the first 45 babies to ship across the states.

Thank you for all you have done for us in the past, and all you will do to help us feed and care for 650 horses that would otherwise have been tortured, butchered and eaten by now.

Kindest Regards,

Jill Starr, President, Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue
