News Flash!  Horse Slaughter is not Humane!
  May 2010

The Equine Cruelty Prevention Act H.R.503

will make it illegal to buy, sell or ship American horses to slaughter for human consumption.

Please contact your congressman and ask them to support this bill.

According to Dr. Lester Friedlander, DVM and former Chief USDA Inspector:  "The captive bolt is not a proper instrument for the slaughter of equids, these animals regain consciousness 30 seconds after being struck, they are fully aware they are being vivisected".

But that's not what Sue Wallis, a Wyoming Republican Representative, wants you to know.  Sue, who some call "Slaughterhouse Sue" is on the board of a group of horse industry professionals who make their livelihoods from the blood of horses...one way or another.  They all want horse slaughter to be available in the U.S. again even though humane compassionate people shut those plants down 3 years ago.  To rally support from the general public Sue Wallis makes outrageous claims and comparisons - as if we are all stupid and will be fooled by her dribble.

Here's something that she recently distributed:   "It is cruel and inhumane NOT to slaughter a horse that you cannot keep and cannot feed".

Now go back up to the top of this letter and read the quote from the Veterinarian who was also the USDA Inspector about the method used by most slaughterhouses to stun horses before butchering them,...the captive bolt gun.

I know you aren't any less intelligent than I am and don't have to be hit in the head with a 4 inch spike to know that it is not going to be humane or merciful.

States that are considering a US horse slaughter plant are South Dakota, Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, Montana and others.

It is important to remember that horse "slaughter" is an act of killing horses for a commercial product.  It is not intended as an act of mercy to end the life of a suffering animal.  That is done by a licensed veterinarian usually at the animal's home with the owners nearby giving their loved friend a peaceful, dignified and heartfelt goodbye.

Horse slaughter is anything but peaceful, dignified or heartfelt.  It is violent, frightening, brutal, painful, bloody and downright un-American.

Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue has been fighting this battle for horses since 1997 when we became a nonprofit organization set on making this a more humane world for horses.

During these last few years we have taken in many horses because their owners fell on hard times...not because they didn't want their horses anymore... not because the horses were old, sick or lame, but because the economy forced them to let go of their large pets.

These horses might have gone to slaughter if we had not been able to take them.

They would have been shipped to Canada or Mexico, where horse slaughter is still legal, in overcrowded trailers without food or water sometimes taking several days to get there.

The hungry, thirsty, exhausted, and likely injured horses would have been funneled through chutes slippery from urine, feces and blood, until they came to the end of the line where a hurried operator of the captive bolt gun would aim for the little diamond area on the forehead of a panicky writhing horse....only to miss the mark the first few times.

And very possibly in anger the operator might just decide to shoot the horse in the neck where it would sever its spine rendering it paralyzed, but not unconscious.  You know the rest....

But this did not happen to the horses rescued by Lifesavers.  We make promises to our horses to care for them and watch over them as long as it takes to find them a loving home who will also make that promise.

In some cases our rescued horses will never find another home, but will live out their precious lives at one of our sanctuaries in peace, tranquility and harmony - as nature meant for them.

Lifesavers has nearly 300 horses to feed and care for every day.

Your support is the only reason we are able to do this.

Your support is the only reason we were able to rescue them so they would not fall into slaughter house hands.
